Spring has sprung — Apple blossom festival hits 75
The best places to enjoy spring in Nova Scotia

Japan may have its cherry blossoms and the southern U.S. its magnolias, but nothing beats the fragrance and bloom of our very own apple blossoms. Those glorious white and pink petals dripping in orchards throughout the Annapolis Valley herald the arrival of spring. This year, it’s the 75th anniversary of the venerable Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival running from May 30–June 4.
The festival has managed to retain its charm over the years, even in its old-fashioned Queen Annapolis competition and series of Princess Teas (Donald Trump and Miss USA take note!). The Coronation Ceremony is on Friday evening followed by the Queen’s Scholarship Ball at the Old Orchard Inn and fireworks.
The theme of the festival this year is “Small Communities, Big Dreams” and there are some welcome changes. Instead of a single evening concert, the Apple Blossom Festival will feature many musical acts in pubs, restaurants and cafes throughout the Valley from May 1-June 3. Saturday is a good day to take the kids with the Children’s Parade getting underway at 10 am in Kentville and prizes awarded shortly afterwards. The Grand Street Parade starts at 1 pm. Throughout the weekend, the Canada Wide Strongman Competition will be televised and it’s the first time it’s ever been hosted in Atlantic Canada. Go to www.appleblossom.com for events and times.
